Whale Shark interaction:

An encounter with a Whale Shark is an experience unparalleled underwater.

Sodwana Bay offers exceptional interaction as Whale Shark movement patterns are typically close in-shore in shallow, clear water.  Whale Sharks often display social behaviour by initiating passive contact with snorkelers and curiously investigate the boat.

Whale shark are recorded in Sodwana Bay year-round.  High season is identified as October through to April annually.

All interaction is properly managed and co-ordinated by experienced and accredited swim facilitators who ensure that interaction remains the choice of the Whale Shark.

Interaction is offered on three levels:

  1. Boat based viewing – for those that do not like to get wet.
  2. Snorkel – for close encounters with the worlds biggest fish.
  3. Aerial – become an ‘eye-in-the-sky’ by microlight to assist with aerial surveys.

The interaction we offer supports Whale Shark Watch data collection program.  Your participation in this activity contributes significantly to the sustainability of a financially unsupported project.
